Snoring is not a laughing matter. It disrupts your sleep as well as that of your family. Some people accept snoring as a part of life. However, these loud and often disturbing sounds do not need to keep you and your loved ones up at night. There are many steps that you can take in an effort to stop snoring.


Getting good nights sleep can actually be one of the keys to prevent snoring! If your sleep is choppy and disturbed it can often lead to breathing problems. Your respiratory system can become unstable when you are sleeping for a few hours and then waking before sleeping for a few more hours later in the day or night. Try to sleep at similar times each night even on your days off. Whenever possible allow yourself seven or eight hours for restful sleep.


Do not drink and do not smoke! Smoking and drinking can lead to load and often annoying snoring patterns. Most people know that smoking has long-term health risks. Smoking causes damage to the lungs including blood flow being disrupted and even blocked in some of the blood vessels. This can result in snoring. The mucous membranes of the nose can become inflamed if you smoke. You can also find that you end up having swelling in your throat when you smoke. All of these effects can cause snoring. Drinking alcoholic beverages can also result in snoring. A portion of your airway can actually collapse from drinking alcohol, which is dangerous and can also be another link to snoring.


Your snoring problem can be a simple as the way you lay in bed. For example, if you lay on your back and you snore, you should try to lie on your side or even your stomach. If you are snoring, try rolling over or switching to a different position to see if this will help you to stop snoring.


Staying active and fit can actually help to prevent snoring. If you are overweight, you can work to lose some weight in order to reduce or eliminate snoring. By exercising and eating well you will be improving your health or maintaining all over good health. By losing some pounds, you might find you also lose your loud nights of snoring.

Sometimes snoring is caused by allergies, sinus infections, colds and related problems. When your tonsils or adenoids are inflamed this can result in snoring. You will want to take decongestants if you have allergies or a cold. In some cases, your doctor might even prescribe antibiotics. As your allergies, cold or sinus infections improve; you might discover your snoring become more bearable or even goes away altogether.


Medications and over the counter medicines can sometimes result in snoring. Any medicines that cause relaxation in the muscles of the throat can trigger snoring. Sleeping pills can also cause muscle relaxation in your throat. Antihistamines are also a medicine that can result in snoring. Once you are able to stop using these medicines, you might find that you no longer snore.


There are snoring treatments that you can try in order to prevent snoring. Some medicines are alternative medicines such as supplements and throat spray. Nasal strips are available as an over the counter treatment to prevent snoring. Dilators are also available for those who are trying to treat their snoring. Special pillows are also on the market that can sometime help to reduce snoring.



If you try to prevent your snoring and still have a problem, you can consult your physician. Sometimes snoring is a sign of a more serious health problem such as sleep apnea. This is a condition in which you actually stop breathing briefly throughout the night. Diabetes and thyroid disease can have snoring as one of the symptoms. Your doctor can help you to find the causes of your snoring
